I first came across the Bubba Mat by Soft Mats at the local library. I had taken Jax to ‘Baby Bounce’ – a story/play time for infants and toddlers run by the library for mums and bubs. After the story and song time we hung around to mingle with a few mums and that’s when we decided to do some tummy time on the mats provided.

Straight away Jax took a liking to the mats. They were not slippery like the cheap mat I had at home. They were grippy and allowed him to use his legs to lift his bum up. He could also use his arms to lift his chest up without sliding backwards.
At home he had mastered the art of sliding backwards across the room but you could see he was always frustrated when doing this because he was clearly trying to move forwards!
This mat was like an answer to all my tummy time questions.
I asked the library staff about the mats and she told me it was called a Bubba Mat. Off to Amazon I popped and we had the awesome mat in our lounge room within a few days (thank you online shopping!).
I know I am not the only mama out there who is experiencing the ‘when will my baby crawl and stop sliding backwards’ dilemma so here is a run down of what the Bubba Mat by Soft Mats are all about!
WHAT is it?
- Durable, waterproof, educational mats
These mats are a soft non slip rubber which is great for your baby to get a good grip with his feet when trying to learn how to get on all fours and to crawl.
- 15mm thickness
WHY is it so good?
- Double sided and easy to clean with a damp cloth
- Ideal for encouraging crawling, rolling, sitting up and learning to walk
- Manufactured to the highest standards from the best materials
These are a great alternative to tummy time on a cold, dirty floor, carpet or boring blanket.
It’s also superior to a play gym as those generally only have soft cotton like material at the bottom, again with no grip.
They also will last years and be a great place for playtime when baby gets older. You can even put a playpen around it and know they are safe.
WHO is it good for?
- Soft floor surface for babies and children to play on from birth to school
Pretty much ready to use for your first round of tummy time with baby until they are around 4 years old and probably older. They will be able to use this as a play mat to keep off the floor and well into their toddlerhood as a space to learn the alphabet etc. by using the creative and educational prints.
Once your child is a bit older you can simply flip the mat and they will be able to continue use with a less kindergarten design. It saves you having to buy a spot rug for them to play with their Lego! (or barbie dreamhouse or do their homework – the possibilities are endless)
HOW much does it cost?
These mats retail for around $199 but considering they are so durable and will last through several years with your child it’s a no-brainer investment. Ditch the wipes warmer and add one of these to your baby registry today! It is definitely something I wish I added to my registry when I had the chance. That being said it is a sound investment.
I did try to find a secondhand one online but the fact that I found maybe 2 or 3 (way out of my area and selling for close to retail) is a testament to the fact that this is not a temporary purchase like say, a highchair or bassinet. This is something that will last through the ages 100%
WHERE do I get my hands on one?
You can find these on Amazon in different styles depending on if you want a fun educational print or something a little more refined – I love the monochrome chevron print with reversible wood design!
They are all reversible so when your child (or you) get sick of one side you can simply switch it over for a change of scenery!
Here are the design options below. I’ve done you a solid and linked the images to the online listing so feel free to click through for more details!
